April 6, 2007 By: Rick Warren
Orlando Speedworld played host to the Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series Friday night, as the series rolled into town for a 50 lap feature. 21 entries were on hand to try their skill and luck on the 3/8 mile track. Qualifying showed several racers with enough speed to win the event, and Ronnie Larson, in the Jandy Pool Products/Eagles Nest entry was the fastest of the fast. Larson’s fast time was followed by closely by local favorite Jared Allison in his DPC entry. Jonathan Camp, Dustin Perez, and Robbie Storer rounded out the top five in Qualifying. After the top runners had cleared tech inspection, Larson pulled a five in the draw for inversion, and the line up was set.
The field rolled onto the track for the 50 lap feature with Storer on the pole position, and Perez on the outside of the front row.they were followed by Camp, Allison, Larson, Robbie Yoakam, Jesse Henley, James Ellis, Cody Blair, and Jamie Kennedy in the top ten. When the green flag waved to start the race, Storer jumped to the front with Camp and Larson on his bumper.
Perez was hung on the outside, and as the field came through turn 3, several cars made contact, starting a chain reaction that ended up with several cars hard into the wall. The cars of Henley, Ellis, and Justin Curtis received the major of the impacts, and were heavily damaged. Henley would be able to rejoin the race, minus much of the body of the racecar.
The race restarted with Storer, Camp and Larson once again moving to the front, followed by Perez. Larson and Camp were were having quite a race for second, allowing Storer to open a slight lead on the pack. Larson was finally able to work under Camp and grab second position, with Perez following through the opening for third. Larson was getting into position to make a run on Storer for the lead, with Perez right behind hoping to follow.
Larson entered turn 3, and the engine in his racer let go, dumping oil under his tires, causing him to spin and back the car into the wall in turn 4. Perez also hit the oil, and had no control of the car at that point, and slammed into Larson’s car. It was a very scary impact, but fortunately, both drivers were uninjured. The race restarted with Storer out front and Camp right behind, but Camp had Mechanical problems and forced to retire from the race. Yoakam moved into second spot, and started looking for a way to get around the car of Storer, and the race for the lead got very exciting. With 6 laps to go, Storer slipped high exiting turn 4, and Yoakam was able to drive under the leader. Before Yoakam was able to complete the pass, the caution came out for a spin in turn 2. The race restarted with Storer in the lead, and he was able to hold off Yoakam for the final laps to take the win.
