Lakeland, FL (May 3, 2008) Tonight at USA International, the Extreme Modified Series ended their season. There is no more Extreme Modified Series due to lack of cars and today's economy and how it has affected the drivers in racing.
It was a night of sadness as the drivers saw their last race but without the support of the drivers, there can be no series. Fourteen modifieds showed up for the 50 lap race but only thirteen ran as Bobby Joe Woodley blew his motor on Friday night during practice.
Wayne "Rocketman" Jefferson did not come to USA International to race. He came to enjoy a day of watching racing with his family. But Kevyn Terry had other plans for Jefferson as he put Jefferson in his back-up car for the night.
Skip Honaker came to race also but due to a bad back, he had Michael Williams in his #2 Modified. Williams, who can definitely drive a modified, was happy to help his friend since the car was there and ready to race.
When qualifying time came, it was once again Rocketman who set fast time with a 21.645 followed by Kurt Jett with a 21.987, Alan McCafferty 22.061, Micheal Williams 22.083 and Lee Collins 22.100. Jett, who was prepared to do double duty with his Late Model also at USA, saw that hope demolished when his motor blew during the ASA Southeast practice so he was happy with his qualifying position with the modified.
Rocketman pulled a zero for the inversion, starting the field straight up.
It was Rocketman's race from beginning to end as he led all 50 laps. On the green, it was Jefferson, Kurt Jett, Michael Williams, Robbie Cooper, and Alan McCafferty leading the way.
But on lap 3, Lee Collins had to go into the pits having his car slow due to water in his fuel. It took several laps for his crew to fix the problem but Lee returned to the field to finish the race on lap 8.
Jefferson had a huge lead over Jett as Cooper pulls up on the rear-end of Michael Williams for third. By lap 10, Cooper had third as Williams slows and goes into the pits done for the night. On lap 12, it was Jefferson, Jett, Cooper, McCafferty and Alan Bruns leading the way.
Lap 14 saw the yellow come out for Art Kunzeman who lost a motor as he went into turn 1. The race is red flagged for track clean-up. On the restart, it is Jefferson, Jett, Cooper, McCafferty, Bruns, Pete Close, Jerry Symons, Kevyn Terry, Eric Rudd and Collins.
Symons puts the heat on Close but Close holds his sixth place postion not leaving Symons any kind of opening to pass. In the meantime, Jefferson is building a bigger and bigger lead over the field. Now it is Bruns turn to look on McCafferty for fourth but McCafferty shuts the door and maintains his postion.
For the rest of the race, it is Close and Symons battling for sixth but Close held the position and never gave Symons an inch. Lap 39 see Kevyn Terry on pit road and climbing out of the car as he is done for the night. With ten laps to go, Symons keeps the heat on Close but Close holds his own. Jefferson takes the checkered followed by Kurt Jett, Robbie Cooper, Alan McCafferty, and Alan Bruns. Jefferson thanks Terry for the opportunity of racing his car as the drivers say goodbye to the Extreme Modified Series.

Orlando Speedworld has got to be Robbie Cooper's favorite race track, since he wins so much here. Cooper added yet another notch in the win column as the FASCAR Extreme Modifieds paid their first visit of the year Friday night.
With Lee Collins unable to race due to a family commitment, Collins tapped "Rocketman" Wayne Jefferson to drive his potent #89 at Orlando and Jefferson made the most of the opportunity setting fast time of 14.056 seconds trailed closely by Kurt Jett at 14.103 and Cooper, who tripped the clocks at 14.314 seconds.
The top three from qualifying were inverted thus putting Cooper on the pole for the 50 lap event and he wasted no time grabbing the early lead while Jefferson snuck by outside pole sitter Jett and tucked himself right on Cooper's rear bumper in the early going.
Jefferson was able to stay close to Cooper, but could never mount a really serious challenge. By mid-race, Jefferson's car was starting to become a handful with Jett eventually getting by on lap 29 for second but he never got any closer than a car length to Cooper. The entire 50 lap distance was run without a caution flag as Cooper claimed yet another Extreme Modified win here trailed by Jett and Jefferson. Kevyn Terry ran pretty much by himself most of the race and came across the stripe fourth while Alan Bruns just nipped Skip Honaker at the checker for fifth. Honaker was sixth with Richie Smith, Jerry Symons, Shain Held, Jon Compagnone and Art Kunzeman completing the finishers.

Samsula, FL (Nov. 3, 2007) It was a perfect day for a 100 lap modified race at New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday. Not too hot and not too cool. It was the last race for the Extreme Modifieds in their first season and a race which honors Ed Meridith. Nineteen came to race with Robbie Cooper of Bronson setting fast time and drawing a 0 pill for the inversion.
Cooper, who went into the race leading the Extreanme points also became their first champion at the end of the race with his second place finish. But it was Jerry Symons from New Smyrna, who worked all night on his car to race Saturday, that lead from green to checkered.
When the green waved, Symons quickly took the point over Cooper. Lap 6 see the first caution for Alan Bruns who spun in turns 3 and 4 after having slight contact with Tank Tucker. Both were fine and both rejoined the field in the rear. On lap 10, we sadly see Alan McCafferty leave the race and go down pit road and taking that hard left that no one wants to do before the end of the race.
Symons takes the point as the race goes back green over Cooper, Lee Collins, Gary Fountain and Jason Garver. But it is a fast green as the yellow comes out once again for Garver and Fountain, Jr. as they get together and go to the rear for the restart. Symons once again takes the point over Cooper, Collins, Gary Fountain, Sr., and Chad Pierce who is driving Fountain's back-up car.
The top three, Symons, Cooper and Collins pull away from the field as Foutain, Pierce, Tank Tucker, Bobby Joe Woodley and Skip Honaker fight for position. Tucker, who has come from the rear due to the early incident with Bruns, passes Pierce for fifth and is looking now for fourth. Just as Tucker is putting the heat on Fountain, the yellow comes out for Kevyn Terry and J.F. McClelland who have gotten together on the backstretch. Terry goes in for crew attention as McClelland is sadly towed off the track.
Symons once again he has the power for the point as he leads the way over Cooper, Collins, Tucker, Fountain, Sr., Woodley, Honaker, Pierce and Alan Bruns. The caution once again comes out for track conditiions as Bruns has a wild ride down the frontstretch sideways. Bruns is fine and is given back his position since the yellow was for track conditions before his wild ride.
Woodley, who is having a great run, must go down pit road with a flat tire and rejoins the field in the rear for the restart. Woodley, after running Hooter's ProCup, has come back home, and loves racing his modified.
Lap 49 sees the restart as once again Symons has the point over Cooper, Collins, Tucker, and Fountain, Sr. Only three laps later the yellow is shown again as Art Kunzeman has spun high in turns 1 and 2 and rejoins the field in the rear. On the restart it is Symons, Cooper, Collins, Tucker, Fountain, Sr., Honaker, Pierce, Bruns, Garver and Wheeler leading the way.
Jared Allison, who is wheeling Yankee Chuck's famous 00, brings out the caution on lap 62 when he is tapped by Kunzeman and almost hits the wall but manages to keep it off. Allison retires the 00 to the pits as Kunzeman is pushed into the pits. The race geos back green on lap 65 as Symons shows he is the king. However, it is another short green as Shain Held brings out the yellow as he hits the turns 3 and 4 wall. Held, who is leading the points for the Orlando SpeedWorld Modified class, retires to the pits.
Lap 70 sees the restart as Symons leads over Cooper, Collins, Tucker and Fountain, Sr. Cooper, who has had enough of Symons leading the way, begins to look high and low to pass Symons but Symons is not having it. But Honaker does pass Fountain, Sr., and takes over fifth as Fountains goes to sixth. It is now Symons, Cooper, Collins, Tucker and Honaker.
With no more cautions, it is a dog fight to the end. With two laps to go, Cooper does give it his all to pass Symons but Symons does not budge. Symons takes the checkered followed by Robbie Cooper, Lee Collins, Tank Tucker and Skip Honaker..
Symons celebrates in Victory Lane as Cooper is proclaimed the 2007 Extreme Modified Champion.

Chamber of Commerce weather was a beautiful sight at USA Speedway Saturday, after a week of thunderstorms in the area. The racers of the FASCAR Extreme Modified Series were on hand for a 75 lap feature race, in support of the Florida State Late Model Championship. 19 cars were signed in to compete on the big ¾ mile track, and all of them brought their best game with them.
By the time the racers were set to take their qualifying runs, the field had been shortened by one, as the car of Curtis Neumann had to withdraw due to engine problems. After all the Modifieds had taken a run at the timing clocks, Robbie Cooper, in the Bronson Lube / Flagship RV entry, had set fast time with a lap of 21.900 seconds, at an average speed of 123.29 MPH. Second fastest was Lee Collins in the Lin-Lee entry, with a time of 21.980 seconds. Following just a tic behind were Jerry Symons, Jason Garver, and Kevyn Terry in the top 5 qualifying spots. After tech was cleared, Cooper drew a pill for the inversion, and pulled a zero, starting the field heads up by qualifying times.
The field rolled onto the speedway for their 75 lap feature with Cooper and Collins on the front row, followed by Symons and Garver in row 2. Row 3 was held by Kevyn Terry and Dan Partelo, with with Chris Escott, Kevin Durden, Greg Edwards and Alan Bruns rounding out the top ten starting spots.
As the field took the green flag to start the race, Collins powered to the front, followed by Cooper, Garver, and Symons. The first caution came out on lap 5 for an incident in turn 3, involving several cars. The cars of Gary Fountain Sr., Shain Held, Dustin Beckelheimer were all unable to continue. The race restarted with Collins out front, followed by Cooper and Garver. As the race started, Cooper’s car was slow to come to speed, and fell to 4th position, behind Garver and Symons. The caution again was displayed on lap 20, as the car of Jason Garver lost a motor in spectacular fashion.
The race restarted with Collins still out front, followed by Symons and Cooper. Lap 29 saw the caution come out again, as the car of Kevin Durden exploded an engine entering turn 1. Durden spun, hitting the wall, and collected the cars of Dwayne Dempsey and Alan Bruns. All 3 cars were damaged too badly to continue. The running order for the restart had Collins continuing to hold the lead, followed by Symons, Cooper, McCafferty and Terry. Lap 33 saw McCafferty’s ride starting to show smoke, and on lap 39 it had gotten bad enough that officials showed the Black Flag to McCafferty for safety reasons. Symons was able to drive under Collins and Grab the lead on lap 38, with Cooper following thru the hole Symons had opened. Collins continued to drop back in the field with handling issues.
Lap 46 saw Cooper start putting heavy pressure on Symons, looking for a way to pass for the lead. Symons and Copper continued battling for the lead until lap 48, when Cooper was able to drive under Symons on the back straight and take the lead. Cooper continued to lead, and opened a lead of several car lengths. The Checkered flag fell for Cooper, taking another win. Second went to Jerry Symons, with a strong run, followed by Kevyn Terry, Dan Partelo, and Chris Escott. After the top finishers cleared tech, the race was declared official.

Are You an Open Wheel Modified Fan? This is the Weekend for You!
This is a weekend of racing that any fan of the open wheel brand of excitement won’t want to miss!
Friday night at Orlando Speedworld the Extreme Modified Series will be in town to run on Orlando’s High Banks. The Extreme Series, with it’s added aero package, and tons of Horsepower, should be well suited to lay down some very fast laps at Orlando.
After the first race of the series at Columbia Motorsports Park, (won by Jason Garver), series director Rick Hall has been fielding numerous telephone calls from drivers anxious to race in the series. Drivers such as Robbie Cooper, Lee Collins, Alan McCafferty are looking for strong runs to add to their points total after the Lake City race. Orlando and New Smyrna regulars Jerry Symons, Tank Tucker, and others are also expected to race in the series. The track at Orlando is very well suited to the modifieds, and expectations are high for a very exciting race.
Saturday Night, the Gulfcoast Modified Series will return to Bronson Motor Speedway, in a race rescheduled due to bad weather two weeks ago. The Gulfcoast Series always puts on a highly competitive race, and the races the series has run at Bronson have not lacked for excitement.

Citrus County’s Curtis Neumann also is looking to move up in the point standings with a strong run this weekend.

The much anticipated unveiling of the Extreme Open Wheel Modifed series had finally arrived Saturday night at the fast ½ mile of Columbia Motorsports Park. Although the field of racers was a little thin as many took a “wait and see” position, the racers that showed up for the inaugural race were all competitive racers that were ready to roll.
The drivers were experimenting with setups in the practice sessions with the new wingboards that the series allows to be used, and most of them hit on the right combination for their cars fairly quickly. The fans all seemed to like the new look of the racecars, even though the changes were fairly minimal, as far as wings go.
When Qualifying time came around, the cars showed new found speed on the timers. The top 4 qualifiers bested the old track record for the open wheel modifieds of 17.200 seconds on the ½ mile.
Robbie Cooper, in the Bronson Lube / Flagship RV entry, set the fast time with a lap of 16.959 seconds.
Second was Kurt Jett in the Jett Concrete Modified, followed by Jason Garver, Lee Collins, and Alan McCafferty. Cooper pulled a three in the draw for inversion, putting Garver on the pole position, with Jett alongside on the front row. The Second row was filled by Cooper, and Collins, followed by McCafferty, Jerry Symons, Curtis Neumann, John Gerstner, Chris Escott and David Baxley filling
When the Green Flag waved to start the race, Garver powered to the lead with Cooper right on his bumper, with Collins right behind. Jett was hung out on the outside, and dropped to fourth spot. Garver and Cooper had no difficulty opening a lead on the rest of the field, and kept the fans excited as they battled for the top spot the entire 75 laps. By the 25 lap mark, the two front runners were all alone in their battle, with Collins and McCafferty battling for third. The only caution of the race came on lap 27 for debris on the racetrack, and allowed the field to be regrouped. Once again, when the green flag waved, Garver and Cooper continued their battle for the #1 spot. Cooper tried again and again to find a way around the Leader, and on several occasions got a wheel beside Garver, but was unable to make the pass.
With ten laps to go, Cooper dialed up the pressure on Garver, and was using every inch of race track, looking for a way into the lead. Lap 73, Cooper gets a wheel under Garver exiting turn 4, and looks like he may have a good enough run to grab the lead. The cars got together just past the flagstand, and both drivers did a great job maintaining control of the racecars. Garver held on for the win, with Cooper right on his bumper. After the top finishers cleared tech, the finishing order was declared official.
The drivers all seemed to agree that the new series and rules worked out well. The modifications are inexpensive(in racing dollars), and can easily be removed to continue to run at local tracks away from the series. The “wingboards” seem to make the cars somewhat quicker, and more stable on entry to the turns. The success of the series remains to be seen, but the commitment of series Director Rick Hall to the growth of the series is a major plus. Hall says he will continue to contact racers, and explain the plusses of the series. Hall is very much convinced that there are a large number of cars just waiting for a chance to run in this type of series, and series success, with large fields of racers, will only be a matter of time.
